Words fail me...

Last night after seeing Cowboys vs. Aliens with the Mrs. (begin snarky remarks) we stepeed next door to the newly opend "The Market" once known as "general store".

My friends i have seen the promised land of urban groceries, and it is good.

I was completly overwhelmed by the finish, the offerings, and the prices. We now have a legitimate grocery store in Downtown Knoxville that is open at good hours.

The first thing you notice is that it feels like a urban grocery. I was recently in Chicago and had a chance to go to some of their nicer mart's that serve some of the small neighborhoods, and that is how i felt walking into The Market.

There is fresh produce, bread, dairy produts, and even a meat counter. I can actually walk to the store to buy what I need for dinner now and not lose my shirt doing it. Mrs. The pol took notice of the prices and was fairly shocked. A gallon of Organic milk for $5! Yes please. I picked up some Bentons bacon as a gift for a friend and bought some meat for Sunday Dinner.

I am thrilled that the people at H.T. Hackney have invested in downtown like this. It really is a needed shot in the arm for our little urban experiment. Hoep everyone likes it like I do.

Please forgive the quality of photo, like i said I was shocked and overwhelmed.

We saw it yesterday too! I knew I hadn't seen it before, but didn't realize it had just opened. You are right, it was impressive.

So the Market is indeed different than Just Ripe and Aisle Nine? Color me pessimistic, but I don't see all three surviving downtown at the same time. I haven't had a chance to scope them all out though, so I don't know which one seems most likely to succeed.

I don't have much use for Aisle Nine (and even less for the "Jackson Avenue Market"), but I'd like to see both Just Ripe and The Market flourish. Hopefully they'll wind up complementing each other rather than competing head-on (I'm not sure exactly how, but I hope it works out that way).

I shopped at both Just Ripe and The Market yesterday. Just Ripe has tofu, tempeh and more vegan-friendly deli fare that I had been driving to EarthFare or Three Rivers to pick up. At The Market I bought mixed greens, bananas, onions and a few various items to round out my husband's dinner that night. I noticed they also have pet food, while Just Ripe does not.

I think the two stores have personalities like my husband and I - one is a vegan and the other likes red meat.

I'm really glad to hear the two stores offer some variety. I keep meaning to check out Just Ripe, but I always seem to find myself in front of the store at about 8:05 p.m.

I do more business with Aisle 9 and Jackson Ave Market, because of their proximity. I hope all 4 can survive downtown at the same time. They're spread out enough that they might do OK.

I bought a pen there the other day. They have good pens...
