OK so The Pol is confused about a recent addition to market square.
Could someone please tell me why we need a solar powered trash can? Isn't the trash can the original green tool. All of those anti-litter (keep it green) campaigns used the old style trash can with great success.
But now we need a solar powered trash can. Why? What does it do, besides hold a little more trash, that a regular trash can doesn't do?
Anyways, I'm agin' it. Hopefully the city didn't pay anything for it.

It's a solar powered COMPACTOR. Sheesh, Pol, get it straight.
Maybe since it is a compactor, it can hold double, triple what a normal can would, taking up less space in landfills, and having to be emptied less often which equals cost-efficiency by the city on several levels. Or maybe they just thot it looked cool.
It's "green" because it holds more trash. This means that it has to be emptied less often, which in turn means that a oil-chugging garbage truck spends less time driving through the city and idling at the curb.
Fewer trash pickups = less oil burned by garbage trucks.
It is, however, only effective if the use of these compactors is more widespread than just a couple on Market Square.
Plus it obliquely helps publicize that Knoxville is an America Solar Cities grant recipient...which would make a fascinating blog post since there's so much going on with regard to that project...
It also reduces city expenses by requiring less city (tax-payer funded) workers to empty the cans regularly. Not only green, but good for our pocket books.
